Fleas
Do you have pets? Dogs? Cats? Ferrets? Chances are you have become familiar with one of the most annoying insects, a pest to you and your pet: the flea.
Even if you don't even have fleas, you may still count the flea as a familiar, albeit not amicable, acquaintance. Fleas can live in areas formerly occupied by pets (apartments, for example) or may migrate from the outdoors (where neighborhood pets roam) to your indoors. Fleas can (and often do, without the presence of animals) bite humans. Like the bites on pets, human flea bites will be evinced as small, scabby, raised red dots that itch. Often these will be seen on legs and ankles, after walking through an infested area.
Flea Life Cycle and Biology
The flea has a four stage life cycle: egg, larva, pupa and adult. Typically, you will become familiar with the adult, which without the aid of a magnifying glass, will appear to be a small moving black speck. His hard exoskeleton makes him nearly impossible to smash with a finger. Unlike ants or other small crawling insects, the adult flea jumps. Each female adult flea produces on the order of 300 eggs, so accordingly, one flea can quickly create a menacing infestation. There are fewer larvae and pupae, but they usually number more than adults, so any control measure must address them. One major caveat to effective control exists: no available pesticides can target the cocooned pupae with
measurable success.
Flea Control and Elimination
Indeed, flea elimination is a sensible target! But since fleas are relatively difficult to control, one needs to take a careful, professional approach.
Non-Chemical Preliminary Steps
- Vacuum! This will stir up the various stages of the flea life cycle, inducing a hatch-out. As previously mentioned, the adult stage is easier to control. It's important to disturb all areas that have not seen recent activity, such as the area under furniture or upholstered cushions.
- Spring Star Flea Trap - Control even the worst flea infestations in
homes. Our Flea Trap is a safe and simple permanent appliance that uses heat and
light to draw fleas from up to 25 feet away. Fleas attracted to the trap fall
through the grid and meet a sticky demise on the replaceable capture pad. Trap
catches 4 to 6 times more fleas than older style traps. Adult fleas are killed
by the thousands on the replaceable capture pad. Works year round without
poisons, expensive pills or visits to the vet. Capture pads last for 3 months or
until filled with up to 10,000 fleas. Made in USA from unbreakable plastic. CSA
listed, meets and exceeds UL rating. Patented.
- Use our
Ultimate Flea Trap. Sometimes, deliberate and frequent placement of our
Ultimate Flea Trap will result in effective flea control. The adults are attracted to the small light and will be trapped on the associated glueboards. This way, you can visualize the efficacy of the solution. It is best to use at least one flea trap per room. Replacement glueboards are available for continued control. It is best used in conjunction with other treatment methods as described below.
Control Starts Here
- Treat all pets with Frontline Plus. Frontline Plus is an easy to use and highly recommended topical treatment for
dogs and cats. By applying it about once a month between your pet's shoulders, it will spread over the coat and interrupt the flea life cycle. Its active ingredient, Fipronil, works on adults, eggs and larvae!
- Spray all floor areas with an all-in-one flea adulticide and insect growth gregulator, Ultracide. Ultracide targets adults, larvae and eggs, and it's an easy to use aerosol.
- New! We now offer a concentrate that will kill all stages of the flea: Flea Stop EC, which contains an insecticide derived from lavender flowers that also acts as a deodorizer.
- Besides Ultracide and Flea Stop EC, we also sell Conquer, a flea adulticide concentrate. It is recommended that you spray now and again in a week or so, considering the stages of the flea's life cycle. Be sure to include hidden areas!
-
Spray floors and upholstery with an Insect Growth Regulator like Precor. Precor interrupts the flea life cycle by rendering eggs laid on treated surfaces unhatchable. The beauty of this solution lies in its longevity as well as its efficacy - one Precor treatment can prevent flea infestations for up to seven months!!! IGRs are very safe and may be sprayed in conjunction with an adulticide application. Continued use of Precor will prevent reinfestation.

- Treat outside by applying Talstar One granules. Talstar One , a new insecticide containing bifenthrin, is effective against many kinds of insects, and the granular formulation will last longer outdoors than any applied spray. We have found Talstar One to be more effective than other liquids or granular products in the control of fleas. This step is especially important to reduce and prevent reinfestation from exterior sources.

SUSPEND® SC
Versatile Insecticide with Long-Term Results?
SUSPEND® SC Insecticide with DeltaGard offers the benefits of deltamethrin in a concentrated suspension of pure micro-crystals. The micro-crystals give Suspend SC a long residual &— instead of being absorbed into porous materials, they stay on the surface. As a result, insects continue to contact them long after the insecticide has been applied. Yet Suspend SC leaves no visible residue, has virtually no odor, and won't clog spray equipment.
Suspend SC is a versatile insecticide approved for a wide variety of uses including indoor and outdoor, residential, industrial, and institutional applications. It's even approved for use in restaurants and other places where food is manufactured, processed or served. Outdoors, it can be applied to turf grass and landscape ornamentals.
